Frequently asked questions

General guidance only. We'll confirm the details for your property at the site visit.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Often not, but it depends. In England, a new or replacement front garden driveway over 5 square metres usually needs planning permission unless it uses a permeable (porous) surface or drains rainwater to a lawn or border on your property. Different rules can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and dropped kerbs, so check with your local council if you're unsure.

What is a permeable or SuDS-friendly driveway?

It's a driveway that lets rainwater soak through or drain away naturally rather than running onto the road. Options can include permeable block paving, resin-bound surfaces on a suitable base, or gravel. The right choice depends on your ground conditions and layout.

Which surface is best: block paving, tarmac or resin?

Each has its strengths. Block paving offers lots of design choice and is easy to repair, tarmac is practical and cost-effective, and resin-bound gives a smooth decorative finish. We'll talk through the pros and cons for your home.

How long does a new driveway take?

It depends on the size, the surface and the groundwork needed. Many domestic driveways take a few days to around a week, weather permitting. We'll give you an estimate with your quote.

Do I need a dropped kerb?

If you'll be driving across a pavement or verge to reach your driveway, you'll normally need permission from the council for a dropped kerb. This is arranged separately through the local highways authority.

Can you just clean my existing driveway?

Yes. Cleaning can make a big difference to block paving and other surfaces. Where suitable, re-sanding and sealing afterwards can help keep weeds and stains at bay for longer.
